Michael Ian Black Slams Gavin Newsom for “Social Media Stunts” Targeting Trump

Political drama is heating up as liberal comedian Michael Ian Black took aim at California Gov. Gavin Newsom, blasting his trolling social media campaign against former President Donald Trump.

In recent weeks, Newsom has rolled out a series of posts and videos mimicking Trump’s trademark style — from combative language to sharp attacks. For some observers, it’s a clear signal that Newsom is laying the groundwork for a potential 2028 presidential run.

Praise or pure immaturity?

Supporters say Newsom’s digital offensive brings humor and fresh energy at a time when Democrats lack a unified voice. Critics, however, argue it’s a distraction and diminishes the seriousness of politics.

On CNN’s Have I Got News For You US, Black didn’t hold back:

“I hate this. I know I’m in the minority, but I hate turning politicians into cartoon characters. I don’t care how good you are online. Just do your job — that’s what matters.”

Allies rush to defend Newsom

Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) defended Newsom as her “partner,” insisting the antics were intentional:

“Yes, it may look immature and foolish, but that’s the point. We’re holding up a mirror so people can see they’ve been cheering on a real clown all along.”

Comedian Dave Foley, star of Kids in the Hall, lightened the mood by joking:

“I think Michael’s antique desire for integrity is adorable.”

Comparing Newsom and Pritzker

Black then contrasted Newsom with Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, whom he praised for delivering the same political messages in a measured, intelligent way.

“Pritzker makes his case like an adult. Newsom, on the other hand, comes across like a needy child desperate for attention.”

But co-host Amber Ruffin countered that silliness might actually work:

“Smart people already vote Democrat. What we need are the so-called ‘idiot votes.’ So let’s go stupid, let’s make memes, let’s do cartoons.”

Silence from Newsom’s office

As the back-and-forth continues to stir headlines, Newsom’s office has so far declined to comment.
