This weekend, dozens of local ABC affiliate stations across the United States will not be airing “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” during its usual late-night slot. Instead, they will broadcast a special tribute to Charlie Kirk — the conservative activist who was recently killed in a politically charged assassination.
This decision follows a wave of backlash over host Jimmy Kimmel’s controversial comments regarding the case and the suspect, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson. Many affiliate stations said Kimmel’s remarks were “insensitive” and “divisive” at a time when the nation needs unity.

From Controversial Remarks to Broadcaster Pushback
The incident erupted when Kimmel, during a recent episode, criticized conservatives for allegedly trying to paint the suspect as a left-wing extremist. He stated:
“We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.”
This statement sparked immediate outrage, particularly among local station owners who felt Kimmel was distorting facts and politicizing a tragedy. Prosecutors had, in fact, confirmed the suspect’s connections to far-left ideologies — a direct contradiction to Kimmel’s implications.
Sinclair and Nexstar Suspend Jimmy Kimmel’s Show
In response to the controversy, two major media groups — Sinclair Broadcast Group and Nexstar Media Group — announced that they would pull “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” from their ABC affiliates’ programming.

Sinclair, which owns more than 30 ABC affiliates, confirmed they would instead air a special program titled “In Remembrance of Charlie Kirk.” Sinclair’s Vice Chairman, Jason Smith, stated:
“Mr. Kimmel’s comments were deeply inappropriate and insensitive at a critical moment for our country. We cannot continue airing this program without a clear commitment to accountability from ABC.”
Sinclair further demanded that Jimmy Kimmel issue a formal apology to Charlie Kirk’s family and make a meaningful personal donation to both the family and Turning Point USA, the organization Kirk co-founded.
Meanwhile, Nexstar, which owns another significant portion of ABC affiliates, followed suit. Andrew Alford, Nexstar’s President of Broadcasting, said:
“Continuing to give Mr. Kimmel a broadcast platform is not in the public interest at this time. We’ve made the difficult decision to pre-empt his show to allow for a return to respectful, constructive dialogue.”
Disney Officially Suspends “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Indefinitely
Amid growing pressure, Disney, the parent company of ABC, officially suspended “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” indefinitely. This move caught many by surprise, especially as Kimmel was reportedly preparing to address the backlash and clarify that his comments were “taken out of context.”
However, Disney chose to intervene before Kimmel could return to the air. Insiders say the mounting political and public pressure left the company with little choice.
Adding to the heat, FCC Chairman Brendan Carr warned of potential regulatory consequences if Disney failed to act. After the suspension was announced, Carr welcomed the decision.
Divided Reactions from the Public
The conservative camp hailed the decision as a victory for accountability in media. Former President Donald Trump praised the suspension, calling it “great news for America.” Many of his supporters echoed that sentiment, framing it as a warning to left-leaning media figures who they believe have long avoided consequences for their rhetoric.
On the other hand, critics — particularly from the liberal and centrist spheres — saw it as a dangerous precedent. Rep. Daniel Goldman (D-N.Y.) denounced the decision, calling it politically motivated censorship. He posted on X (formerly Twitter):
“I’m not sure who deserves more disdain and disgust: Trump and the FCC for their blatant violation of the Constitution, or Disney and Nexstar for folding to a wannabe mob boss and his authoritarian goons.”
Free Speech or Ethical Boundaries?
This situation is no longer just about Jimmy Kimmel and Charlie Kirk. It has become a flashpoint in the broader debate over free speech, media ethics, and political influence.
Can late-night hosts say whatever they want under the banner of free expression, or should they be held to a higher standard — especially when their platform reaches millions?
In today’s deeply polarized America, even a single sentence can ignite a national firestorm. The backlash against Kimmel and the tribute to Charlie Kirk may be just one example of how fraught the balance between speech and responsibility has become in modern media.
